In November 2016, we hosted two special reunion events for former students and ‘Friends of the Chaplaincy’.
It was an opportunity for old housemates and others to get together over a buffet meal – including many who were back in the chaplaincy for the first time in many years.
Each evening also featured opportunities for former chaplains, staff and residents to tell a story or two about their time in and around the community on Elmwood Avenue.
The 1990s – 2000s Reunion
On Friday 11th November, around 80 people gathered for the first reunion. Andrew Forster welcomed and compered the evening, with contributions from many former Anglican and Methodist chaplains and members of staff. It would be safe to say some of the stories and memories shared are best left unrepeated! Some travelled from as far afield as Sweden, Scotland, and even Dunmurry to take part.
The 1950s – 1980s Reunion
The second reunion was held on Saturday 26th November, with 50 more Friends of the Chaplaincy gathering. The evening was led by Bishop Harold Miller, with former students again coming from far and wide.
On both nights, the current chaplain, Revd Barry Forde, also got a chance to share about the vision for chaplaincy in Belfast over the next few years. In March 2017, we will be hosting a Gala Ball at Queen’s Great Hall to promote our new fundraising project – watch this space for more!
