Student Accommodation

Latest Update: 21st August 2023

Please note that we are now full for the 2023-24 academic year.

You are welcome to make an application if you wish, but you will automatically only be placed onto our Reserve list – that is, a list of applicants who we will contact if any spaces unexpectedly open up.

About The Hub: Being Community

The Hub offers student accommodation in the Queen’s Quarter of Belfast. We aim to be a community for all: for the students who live in the Church of Ireland and Methodist chaplaincy; for people looking for somewhere comfortable to hang out; and for a whole host of folk who have previously come to church or lived in the area.

How It Works

Situated in the heart of Queens University campus there is student accommodation for up to 49 residents across the houses owned by the Church of Ireland and Methodist Churches.

From mid-September to early June these rooms are occupied by students. We place a high value on the sense of community in living together, sharing meals, social activities, and a wide range of activities centred on exploring the Christian faith together. Over the years students from the centre have travelled far and wide together on Easter and Summer outreach teams, whilst during each year many of the activities are student-led.

Each house has a House Warden whose role it is to try and ensure that everyone gets along, pays the cooking bills, provides food that is edible, and clears up afterwards!

Students are encouraged to try the many activities and groups that happen across the community every year. In this way, every resident is given a ready-made, stress-free way to make friends and be part of the chaplaincy’s mission.

Often, students spend at least two years of their time at University living in the chaplaincy, and for many it can be one of the most formative times of their lives.

Types of Accommodation

For 2023-24, we have modified the categories of rooms that are on offer to give applicants more choice over the type of room they may apply for.

The categories are:

  • Standard single: the bulk of our rooms (10-21m2)
  • Top Floor single: a standard single, but with a sloping ceiling on one side.
  • Small single: rooms with a smaller floor area (<12m2)
  • Shared: all between 24-30m2, sharing with one other person.

Published rates are subject to revision at this stage. The number of spaces remaining available are indicated below.

In addition to the fees are some small extras: mainly, the cost of student milk for the year (we buy all your milk for you, to save precious fridge space!) and, as restrictions permit, the legendary Centre Weekend residential.

Fees cover a 36 week period (plus two free weeks at Christmas, when we are closed). Most students choose to pay in three payments, in alignment with student loan payments, but other options can be negotiated.

What are the rooms like?

The chaplaincy is based across six large Victorian townhouses, and one of the great things about this is that our rooms come in all shapes and sizes!

However, what you can expect to find in your room is the same for everyone. Typically, each student will have provided for them:

– hotel quality bed, mattress and mattress protector
– wardrobe
– sink and mirror
– desk
– chairs
– lamp
– waste paper bin

Depending on the size and shape of each room, this may vary; and particularly in the larger shared rooms, additional furniture may feature (e.g. bookcases). It is usually the case that students in their second or third year are allocated the largest rooms. Any particular requirements (e.g. mobility) will, of course, be taken in to account when rooms are allocated.

We do not have en suite bathrooms, but each house has several shared bathrooms. Our staff clean each kitchen and bathroom several times a week, but students are expected to keep their own rooms in a good state.

Each house has communal kitchen and dining rooms, and the students in each house cook for each other on a rota basis from Monday-Thursday during term time – which usually means you only have to cook once every three weeks, but are guaranteed a hot meal every night!

Applying to Live in The Hub

We typically receive a high number of applications for around 25-30 new spaces each year.

Applications for student accommodation are now open for both those already at university/college, and those who hope to start in Belfast in 2023. We will regularly review applications and make offers all the way through to A Level results day in August, but we would strongly encourage applicants to apply as early as possible due to demand.

The residential centre welcomes applications from students intending to study at any of the third-level institutions across the city of Belfast.
